Anger is, of course, a normal emotion. However, when a person is angry too often or too intensely, anger can be very destructive. Not only can it damage relationships, it can lead to confusion and frustration in the person who can’t control it. Myths about Anger

For many people, getting control of their anger starts with learning the truth about some common misconceptions about anger, including:

Myth: Anger just happens and can’t really be controlled.
Truth: With practice, you can gain control over how your anger is expressed.

Myth: Anger is intimidating to others and it helps me get the respect I deserve.
Truth: Aggression may get people to do what you want them to do in some instances, but it does not make them respect you. Respect is earned by dealing with opposing views or challenging life circumstances constructively

Myth: It’s important to my health for me to vent my anger.
Truth: Neither holding anger in nor forcefully venting it out is healthy. The key is to minimize your anger and to manage what remains in a positive way.

Learning to Change Your Outlook

You can’t change the people around you or the events that make you angry. That fact is one of the most important lessons to be learned in anger management therapy at our Fort Collins treatment center. Instead, what we teach people to do is reduce both the physiological arousal that anger causes and the resulting emotions.

Effective anger management involves learning assertiveness and conflict resolution techniques, as well as creating an anger control plan with concrete strategies that can be used when anger arises. The goal is for the participant to develop a number of skills, including the ability to:

  • Understand anger triggers, which can be physical, mental, emotional, or behavioral in nature
  • Be aware as anger rises and be able to accurately assess anger level
  • Use assertive communication
  • Reduce or prevent anger with relaxation techniques
  • Spot inaccurate thinking that leads to anger
  • Resolve issues without becoming angry
  • Begin mending relationships with loved ones

It’s important to note that while excessive anger is not healthy, it also is not uncommon. Many men and women struggle with anger issues. However, once the appropriate anger management tools are acquired, it is much easier to keep that negative emotion under control. The result is healthier relationships and improved emotional well-being. Reducing anger can also have positive physical benefits such as lowering blood pressure and decreasing the level of potentially harmful “fight or flight” hormones in the bloodstream.
