  • A new intimate relationship. The emotional “high” you feel when starting a new romantic relationship is similar to the high you feel when drinking or using drugs. Consequently, this very positive development in your life can lead to a very negative return to substance abuse. Focus on channeling your enthusiasm into the relationship rather than letting it take you down the wrong path.
  • Injury or illness. For many people, substance abuse is the way they “medicate” when life gets painful or challenging. An injury or illness can cause the kind of physical and emotional distress that makes you want to drink or do drugs again. Be sure to address your ailment quickly and in a healthy way so it doesn’t have a negative impact on your recovery.
