Suicide in Larimer County

More Coloradans are killing themselves in the prime of their lives. What is Larimer County doing about it?

“Nearly 1 in 3 people who died by suicide in Larimer County over the past 5½ years were between the ages of 45 and 64.

Across the country, 232,000 people between the ages of 45 and 64 died by suicide between 1999 and 2016 — more than any other age group, according to a study released in June by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The age group also accounted for the largest increase in suicides in that time period.

Advocates of a new behavioral and mental health facility in Larimer County hope that voters will fund a new center not only to improve access to services for people in crisis but also to help them avoid crisis in the first place.

In the meantime, providers are finding ways to share resources across the region and work to lower the number of suicides in Northern Colorado. “
